3 Grounding Practices For Fall

anxiety connection grounding growth Sep 19, 2022

If you are anything like me + my family, this change of season invigorates my senses in the most beautiful ways. It can also be overwhelming for many of us.

There are several holidays that potentially require a lot of physical/mental/emotional preparation, outside work to be done, family/friend connections to maintain and it’s also the last quarter of the year – so deadlines can feel especially heavy.

It is easy to find yourself scattered + imbalanced. Learning how to ground yourself during these hectic months can help bring back the balance we yearn for during this beautiful season, and allow us to connect in more meaningful ways to others.

Autumn is a time to let go + celebrate. As the trees shed their leaves, we also have things in our lives that need to be released. Sometimes it’s as simple as saying no to something to free up more space for yourself. In many cultures, harvest time is a time to celebrate the work of growing crops.

Personal + professional growth is worthy of acknowledgement + celebration. Notice my choice of words: growth as opposed to achievements.

Ground is a common return path for current or a direct physical connection to the Earth. We have that same connection, and by coming back to it we become our own energy source.

We have the opportunity to draw on our own foundation, to be present, to organize our thoughts and to grow from a place of nourishment. In other words, we tune into our own power by realigning with ourselves. It is crucial to intentionally spend energy connecting to ourselves during this potentially frantic time of year.

Here are 3 ways to ground yourself this autumn:

1. GO OUTSIDE

There are so many benefits to being outside, even for just a few minutes! Taking in fresh, crisp air + feeling the sun on your face can do wonders to reset your mind + heart. I work from home, so when I hear the mail truck come, I walk outside in my bare feet so that I can physically connect to the ground.

Open your windows, collect leaves, plant flowers (mums + pansies are my favorites during the fall/winter), go on a hike, pick apples. There are so many ways to connect with the earth + enjoy its vast beauty during autumn.

2. TUNE INTO YOUR SENSES

When anxiety threatens to overtake me, one of the best ways to pull myself back to the present is to focus on my senses. I take one sense at a time + focus on what I’m experiencing at that moment. If I’m able to, I sit on the floor while I do this.

Go through each sense, and take a deep inhale + exhale while you take in 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you touch, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste. This practice only takes a few minutes, and immediately brings me back to the present, loosening the tight feeling in my chest, hips, and shoulders.

3. CREATE A SHORT ROUTINE

Schedule time each day for YOU. This can be as simple as journaling with a mug of something warm, meditating before you start your day, some simple stretches + deep breaths before going to bed, or a quick walk during the day. You give so much of your time to everyone around you.

Devoting time to yourself every day will nourish you + fill your cup so that you can pour for others.

Human beings are so different + versatile. There is no one-size-fits all way to ground, so as you learn to incorporate new practices of self-connection, pay attention to what your body is telling you. It will lead you to what you need to create your own foundational source of energy.

One way to learn more about what works well for you is by taking an Enneagram class, like the ones we offer here at Speakers 4 Seekers. The Enneagram provides a deeper look into why we are the way that we are, and why others are the way they are. Enhancing our knowledge of ourselves + others creates beautiful space for deep, meaningful connections – both old and new.
